The original Kiva robot, known as the DU 1000, was a driving unit with a 1000-pound lifting capacity and was later supplied to Amazon. The Hercules, introduced in 2007 as the DU 3000, had a 3000-pound lifting capacity, also stemming from Kiva’s original design. The Pegasus succeeded the original Kiva, named after the winged horse. While performing the same function of moving pods, the Pegasus is only 19 cm high, 10 cm shorter than the original, providing 10 cm more storage space. It can lift 560kg, surpassing the 450kg of the old model. Notably, it has half the components and is more cost-effective. The Pegasus also serves as a versatile base for various attachments, such as the X-Sort Drive, a conveyor belt system used for sorting items. The Xanthus is the next generation of Kiva’s technology, presented at the Amazon MARS conference in June 2019. With a thinner build, the Xanthus is one-third the size of the original Kiva in terms of parts and costs half as much. It supports a wide range of attachments and is easier to maintain due to its fewer components. Key Xanthus attachments include the Xanthus Sort Bots, which help sort parcels into chutes, and the Xanthus Tote Mover, which moves Amazon totes between stages like picking, packing, multi-sorting, and gift wrapping. Additionally, the Xanthus Moveable Cabinet was shown, though its details were not fully explored.
